4Scissors Culture Group
The registered company behind the Varsity businesses in Lusikisiki, and the name you will see on our invoices, tender documents and contracts.
Our story
4Scissors Culture (Pty) Ltd was registered with CIPC in 2018. In 2022 the company opened Varsity Butchery & Braai at 2 Jacaranda Street in Lusikisiki, the main town of the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape.
The butchery grew around a simple habit of the town: people buy their meat and want it braaied right there. We put the fire next to the counter. Varsity Pub followed so the braai had somewhere to sit down, and Varsity Blue Bottle Liquors so customers could take the drinks home at bottle-store prices.
Four years on, the three units trade seven days a week on the same site, buy from the same suppliers and are run by one management team. The group's next stage is supplying institutions: bulk meat, braai packs for events, and beverages for functions, across the OR Tambo District and the wider Eastern Cape. A fourth trading name, Msikaba Aqua Streams, is reserved for a future venture.

How the group is run
Three tills, one set of books. The controls behind the counter matter as much to a procurement officer as they do to us.
Buying
Meat comes in as carcasses and bulk cuts from established livestock and wholesale suppliers and is broken down on site. Beer, cider, spirits and soft drinks are bought directly from the brewers and national distributors wherever supply allows, with a wholesaler as backup.
Stock and cash
Every unit cashes up and counts stock daily on a point-of-sale system, with weekly full stocktakes. Variances are investigated, not written off. CCTV covers the tills, chillers, stock rooms and loading area.
People
Staff are from Lusikisiki and the surrounding villages. Attendance is recorded on a biometric clock, employment contracts and a disciplinary code are in place, and the butchery team is trained in-house on cutting, hygiene and cash handling.
Leadership
Varsity is run as a brand first. The group is owner-managed, with a management team responsible for strategy, procurement and finance, and unit managers who run the daily trading of the butchery, pub and bottle store. Business and procurement contacts reach the management team through the office.
Community
We trade in the town we live in. The group has a written community support and sponsorship policy and considers requests from local schools, sports clubs and community events in the Ingquza Hill area. Requests can be sent to info@varsityculture.co.za.
